The Burnham Government
In his first speech as Prime Minister, Andy Burnham acknowledged the scale of the challenge ahead – recognising that he is the sixth in the role in just a decade. He argued that this should represent a ‘circuit-breaker’ moment and pledged to restore public confidence in government by fostering a renewed sense of national unity, common purpose, positivity and hope.
After weeks of speculation, he has now also completed the formation of his Cabinet – combining experienced ministers from across the Labour Party with close allies and several newer figures.
Burnham wants his first 100 days to feel fast and dynamic, with a steady programme of announcements on the cost of living, growth, devolution, social care and public service reform. In parallel, work will begin on the more substantial economic programme expected in the Autumn Budget. This is likely to provide the first stage of Burnham’s 10-year plan to restructure the British economy, with a focus on devolution, investment, reindustrialisation, public service reform and a more active role for the state.
The central test will be when decisions need to be made to fund Burnham’s agenda while retaining the confidence of businesses, markets, Labour MPs and the general public more broadly.
